Vic's Collaborative Work

As many Chesnutt fans know, Vic recorded songs for many other records besides his own.

Some of these recordings were covers, such as the End of The World as We Know It, on the Surprise Your Pig R.E.M tribute in 1992. Others were his own original work, such as 'Weed to the Rescue' on the Hempilation compilation. Vic was a strong supporter of the use of marajuana for medicinal purposes.

One of his most recent projects was composing the ‘Mitte Ende August’ movie soundtrack. Also he played with Nazan Öncel on her track ‘Bitirdin’, a project which he is quoted as saying he was ‘honoured to do’.

Vic also produced his niece's first two albums, Liz Durrett's ‘Husk’ and ‘Mezzanine’.

  • Songwriter: Jack Logan

The parishioners cleared the pews
And mingled on the stairs.
Alone at the altar now
He whispers to himself.

Chorus:
Why have you forsaken me
In my time of need?
Why have you forsaken me?
Why must I think these things?

A stranger among his flock,
The sermon's through the night
I'd like to see through stained glass
Seems much less than divine

(Chorus)

When Monday morning comes,
He doen't rise from bed
He dreams the pits of hell
Are realised in his head.
He prays for eternal life
But sees only the dead.

(Chorus)

Goodbye Sadness
  • Goodbye Sadness
  • Songwriter: Yoko Ono

Goodbye, sadness, goodbye, goodbye,
I don't need you anymore.
I wet my pillow evry night,
But now I saw the light.

Goodbye, goodbye, sadness,
I don't need you anymore.
Goodbye, goodbye, sadness,
I can't take it anymore.

Goodbye, sadness, goodbye, goodbye,
I don't need you anymore.
I lived in fear evry day,
But now Im going my way.

Goodbye, goodbye, sadness,
I don't need you anymore.
Goodbye, goodbye, sadness,
I can't take it anymore.

Hello, happiness, wherever you are,
I hope you hear my song.
Never want to cry again
Or hold my breath in fear again.

Goodbye, goodbye, sadness,
I dont need you anymore.
Goodbye, goodbye, sadness,
I can't take it anymore.

lights out
  • The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia
  • Songwriter: Bobby Russell

He was on his way home from candletop
Been two weeks gone and he thought he'd stop
At webs and have him a drink for he went home to her
Andy wo-lo said hello
He said hi what's a doing
Wo said sit down I got some bad news that's gonna hurt
Said Im your best friend and you know that's right
But your young bride aint home tonight
Since you been gone she's been seeing that amos boy seth
He got mad and he saw red
Andy said boy don't you lose your head
Cause to tell you the truth Ive been with her myself

Chorus:
That's the night the lights went out in georgia
That's the night that they hung an innocent man
Don't trust your soul to no back woods southern lawyer
Cause the judge in the towns got bloodstains on his hand

Andy got scared and left the bar
Walking on home cause he didn't live far you see
Andy didn't have many friends and he just lost him one
Brother thought his wife mustve left town
So he went home and finally found the only thing
Daddy had left him and that was a gun
He went off to Andy's house
Slipping through the back woods quiet as a mouse
Came upon some tracks too small for Andy to make
He looked through the screen at the back porch door
He saw Andy lying on the floor
In a puddle of blood and he started to shake

The georgia patrol was making their rounds
So he fired a shot just to flag em down
And a big bellied sheriff grabbed his gun and said
Whyd you do it?

The judge said guilty in a make believe trial
Slapped the sheriff on the back with a smile and said
Suppers waiting at home and I got to get to it

Chorus

They hung my brother before I could say
The tracks he saw while on his way
To Andy's house and back that night were mine
And his cheatin wife had never left town
And that's one body that'll be found
You see little sister don't miss when she aims her gun

Repeat chorus twice

injured bird
  • Injured Bird
  • Songwriter: Vic Chesnutt, Michael Stipe

You arrived as I was leaving
You were filled with that popular feeling
I could tell by the walk
I have heard about the walk

Think to yourself, like when you're in bed
Something clobbered me in the head
Am I ready to leave, you said
I have exhausted this view
I have exhausted this view

I was flattered but ambivalent
I was captive and I was spent
I was wounded the other day
But you
You couldn't see me:
I'm really me

Of all the stories I've heard
The one with the injured bird
Seems to me most true
It seems to me most true

You kept it warm, and safe in a box
A grass and old shattered bent cardboard box
Then you let the cat over the fence
It doesn't get any better than this
It doesn't get any better than this

I was wounded the other day
But you
You couldn't see me:
I'm really me

Alison

  • Songwriter: Elvis Costello

Oh it's so funny to be seeing you after so long, girl.
And with the way you look I understand
that you were not impressed.
But I heard you let that little friend of mine
take off your party dress.
I'm not going to get too sentimental
like those other sticker valentines,
'cause I don't know if you are loving some body.
I only know it isn't mine.

Alison, I know this world is killing you.
Oh, Alison, my aim is true.

Well I see you've got a husband now.
Did he leave your pretty fingers lying
in the wedding cake?
You used to hold him right in your hand.
Bet he took all he could take.
Sometimes I wish that I could stop you from talking
when I hear the silly things that you say.
I think somebody better put out the big light,
'cause I can't stand to see you this way.

Alison, I know this world is killing you.
Oh, Alison, my aim is true.
My aim is true.

Rain
  • Buckets Of Rain
  • Songwriter: Bob Dylan

Buckets of rain
Buckets of tears
Got all them buckets comin' out of my ears.
Buckets of moonbeams in my hand,
I got all the love, honey baby,
You can stand.

I been meek
And hard like an oak
I seen pretty people disappear like smoke.
Friends will arrive, friends will disappear,
If you want me, honey baby,
I'll be here.

Like your smile
And your fingertips
Like the way that you move your lips.
I like the cool way you look at me,
Everything about you is bringing me
Misery.

Little red wagon
Little red bike

I ain't no monkey but I know what I like.
I like the way you love me strong and slow,
I'm takin' you with me, honey baby,
When I go.

Life is sad
Life is a bust
All ya can do is do what you must.
You do what you must do and ya do it well,
I'll do it for you, honey baby,
Can't you tell?

zoo
  • Like A Monkey In A Zoo
  • Songwriter: Daniel Johnston

I'm chained to the wall
I'm nothing at all
And my staring at the sunset
Thinking of better things to do
Like a monkey in a zoo

The days go so slow
And I don't have no friends
Except for all of these people
Who want me to do tricks for them
Like a monkey in a zoo

And it could happen to you
You could be in my place
No it wasn't all ways like this
Oh, but I never coming

I'm so alone
But this my home
And the bars that surround me
Keep me from knowing any better
Like a monkey in the zoo

Throw me a peanut

Laugh and make jokes
But I had enough peanuts
And I'm ready to croak
Like a monkey in a zoo

You come to look at me
You seem so amused
But things would look different
If you were in my shoes

I know it's my fault
But I want out
And when I cry out
Nobody seemed to understand
Like a monkey in a zoo

You say I'm cute
You don't know how much that hurts
You don't know how it feels
To live in your own dirt
Like a monkey in the zoo

And it could happen to you
You could be in my place
But don't let yourself slip
Don't keep egg on your face (?)

I use to be happy
I can remember those days
But I sold my freedom
For free room and board
Like a monkey in a zoo

way it goes
  • Way It Goes
  • Songwriter: Alejandro Escovedo

God bless a child
Doesn't have a mother
But is fast asleep
God bless a father
Doesn't have his other
But has his soul to keep

Well sometimes it takes
More than just walkin' away
Well sometimes it takes
A good friend to say
Yeah at times it's a good heart, it's hungry
Yeah at times it's a good heart, it's hungry

Throw Betty in the Indian Ocean
Jump right in
Great white men tap you on the shoulder
Jump right in

Sometimes it takes
More than just walkin' away
Sometimes it doesn't take
A genius just to say
But at times it's your heart weighs
Yeah at times it's your heart weighs

Close your eyes now, your mind now
Reach right in, she still there now
Yeah at times it doesn't take
A girlfriend to say
But at times, better off
Throwing it away

reprise
  • A Classico Reprise
  • Songwriter: Giant Sand and Vic Chesnutt

Always late
And a day behind
Have to wait
Another year to be on time
You can tell me but I know
When it's so classico

You found a love
Delivered from above
You left your heart
And back to the start
It's just the way it's gotta go
When it's so classico

Now the news is telling me
They're confused, a new enemy
And all the bombs are gonna blow
And even that is so classico

Down I tell you
They've got a word for such'n'such
And they tell you
Rumours are calling much too much
Oh and the tragic
Is so classic

Ace a moon
It's classico
la la la la (x 6)
So classico

believe
  • You Still Believe In Me
  • Songwriter: Brian Wilson

I know perfectly well
Im not where I should be
I've been very aware
You've been patient with me

Every time we break up
You bring back your love to me
And after all I've done to you
How can it be

You still believe in me

I try hard to be more
What you want me to be
But I can't help how I act
When you're not here with me

I try hard to be strong
But sometimes I fail myself
And after all I've promised you
So faithfully
You still believe in me

I wanna cry...

Leave. Daddy needs no more grief,
Little darling fell off the roof.

Oh jack snapped into sharper focus,
slicing myopic fungus away.
Oh jack snapped into sharper focus,
slicing myopic fungus away.
Oh jack snapped into sharper focus,
slicing myopic fungus away.

Double dutch bus is coming down the street,
stopping at the homes of all your enemies
Double dutch bus is coming down the street,
stopping at the homes of all your enemies
Double dutch bus is coming down the street,
stopping at the homes of all your enemies

And the spotlight is hot and it'll burn your fingers!
And dry rot will get under trapeze swings.

Postcard blues
  • Postcard Blues
  • Songwriter: Cowboy Junkies with Vic Chesnutt

Especially with my head pounding
and lying helpless in my bed
I long for you and your expert hands
To ease this white heat from my head
And you would boast that you knew
All the pressure points inside
And you could just as easily kill me
Beneath the desire that I hide
But as your patient I knew
That your healing powers had grown
From a sore that's far far deeper
Than this heart where the pain was born
With my head again clear
I think of words to send to you
To coax you back to my side
But always leave out I love you
And then through my front door
A picture of a faraway land
And to with love on the back
And once again I reach for my pen.

grim augury
  • Grim Augury
  • Songwriter: Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse

Both our families after gathering
We're cutting a baby out
With my grandmother's heirloom antler-handled carving knife
They were under her grand chandelier
Where we all, together, have shared holiday dinner

But it was your father that was holding the knife
Yeah, I begged you not to make me tell ya
Yeah, I pleaded with you to, to leave it alone
I told ya
I told you that you didn't want to know

What went on in my horrible dream
I was peering in through the picture window
It was a heart-warming tableau
Like a Norman Rockwell painting
Until I zoomed in

I was making noises in my sleep
But you wouldn't believe me when I told ya
That I wasn't with someone in my dream
Catfish were wriggling in blood and gore in the kitchen sink

Yeah, I told ya
I told ya
I told you
Now sweetie, please promise me
That you won't sing
This sad song, grim augury

littleman
  • Little Man
  • Songwriter: Mark Mulcahy

Little, little, little, little
When the heroes callin'
When the heroes callin'
When the heroes callin', callin'

Little man
Little man

I miss you when the rain is fallin'
I miss you when the heroes callin'
I hear you when I'm kneelin', weepin'
All the walls are speakin', speakin'

Little man
Little man

I wear your clothes but they don't fit me

I'm tryin' to be what I should be
A spoken word of being lied to
A broken word and what you end up tied to

Little man
Little man

Stay where you are
Stay where you are
Stay where you are
Stay where you are

Little man
Little man
Little man, you can do no wrong
Little man
